| Historic Nauvoo, Illinois
In
1839, Nauvoo was a disease infested swamp on a bend of the Mississippi River.
By the winter of 1845 it was bigger than Chicago and was considered by many as
the most beautiful and progressive community on the frontier. In 1846, most of
its residents went west to the Great Salt Lake Valley. Today, after spending millions
of dollars and over 20 years of restoration, Nauvoo has been returned to its former
beauty, 10 miles south of Fort Madison.
