| Fall in love with Fort Madison’s history, heritage
and hospitality. History lives on at Fort Madison, established
1808, to protect a trading post, it was the first fort built on the upper Mississippi.
“Black Hawks Band” conducted several sieges on the fort and in 1813 Fort Madison
was abandoned and burned. In
1880, Santa Fe Railroad partnered with the community and opened rail traffic in
all directions, providing a windfall to the town. Heritage includes
the spectacular vintage Victorian homes and public buildings sprinkled throughout
Fort Madison, a legacy to us from the German, English and Irish pioneers who settled
Lee County. Also, prevalent is our rich hispanic population, descentants of Mexicans
who migrated to Fort Madison encouraged by employment opportunities with the Santa
Fe Railroad. Hospitality is a treasure that Fort Madison shares
with every guest. Fine dining and comfortable stays are just two precious stones
Fort Madison offers. | | |
