Historic Iowa State Penitentiary was constructed in 1839 and ran until it’s closing in 2015. That’s almost 177 years! It’s also the oldest prison west of the Mississippi River!
Fort Madison is known as “PEN CITY” because of Sheaffer Pen and Iowa State Pen.
