Shuckfest at West Point Sweet Corn Festival

Shuckfest at West Point Sweet Corn Festival

WEST POINT SWEET CORN FESTIVAL 2010 - The sweet corn for the West Point Sweet Corn Festival typically comes from Southern Wisconsin or Northern Illinois. Since warmer temperatures will accelerate maturity, we usually do not know exactly where we will get the corn from until a few days or maybe a day before the shuck date. Typically the sweet corn will come from a different source every year.

There are two types of corn, sugar enhanced and super sweet. Most always we get super sweet. It makes the best festival corn. In 2010 the corn came from Northern Illinois.

In 2010 there were about 2500 ears per ton and we typically bring in up to 18 ton. That is 45,000 ears of free sweet corn. In 2009 all the shucking was completed in about 1 hour 15 minutes. That is about 600 ears per minute. In 2010 we exceeded 700 ears per minute.

Although not official, it is a widely known fact that West Point, Iowa holds the record for the fastest shucking festival town.

Various local businesses truck the corn, cool and store the corn, provide food and drink for the shuckers and lastly, local people set up, husk and clean up afterwards. It is a true community event.

A Christmas Wish directed by Amy Graham

An original production first presented in 2008, and then again in 2016, A Christmas Wish features local talent and guest artists from afar to tell the story of a small girl away from home on Christmas Eve. Lost and exhausted, she makes her way to an abandoned theater where she snuggles in an empty seat and falls asleep. Her dream reveals an angel who was sent to earth by God to find the one thing that best represents everything good that has been done since the birth of His son, Jesus Christ. The music of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra transcends the audience through the story of the little girl’s dream. After she awakes, she is met by a kindly barkeeper who assists her with getting back home to her father. The angel returns to heaven and places in the Lord’s hand the wish of a soul for the happiness of another. This production is directed by Legacy Theater Foundation board member, Amy Graham. Saturday's performance is generously sponsored by Carson Motors.
